Charles Darwin University
“Benchmarking is essential if you need an evidence base for decision-making about online learning.” Charles Darwin University (CDU) in the Northern Territory introduced web-based learning resources to staff and students in 2003. While the learning management system produced statistics about the volume of use of the resources, it did not explain why teaching staff chose to use or not use the system. In 2005 CDU undertook a baseline review of teacher’s use of and attitudes to e-learning and the University’s learning management system. The review found varying levels of uptake among teachers, highlighting issues of instructional design, student focus and resourcing. In this case study, Dr. Terry Clark talks about CDU’s initial experience in benchmarking and the benefits for decision-making on future approaches to e-learning. Case Study Report What was the aim of the benchmarking activity? What were the highlights? What were the benefits to the organisation? What would be done differently next time? Summary
